Read the animal family and the exact look
A statue can award the base fox or a panda bear look. A repeated-action condition can then award another look within a family. Hats, scarves and other clothing are separate accessories, even if they appear beside the animal in a chest.
Sled dyes recolor sleds rather than turning your animal into another character. Do not use an accessory condition or a sled’s level as a substitute for a character prerequisite.

Equip the prerequisite before starting
Choose the correct starting look
Open a clothing chest and select the animal named by the condition. Similar colour or family membership is not the same as the documented prerequisite.
Do the matching action
Distinguish being hit from hitting another player, and distinguish winning a populated race from completing a solo run.
Check and select the new variant
Watch for the unlock and reopen a chest to choose the acquired look. A progress statistic alone is not proof that the requested variant is selected.

For colours applied to sleds rather than animal variants, open the Dyes panel reference. It separates recorded sled-level unlocks from the current editor details that remain unverified.
